Is Smoking Nutmeg Dangerous? As strange as it may sound, smoking nutmeg to get high has become a trend among recreational drug abusers. Nutmeg is a spice that has been used in the kitchen for years, but recent videos and blogs on the internet have showcased the drug’s mind-altering potential when the spice is smoked.

Nutmeg has become a popular “drug” of choice for people seeking an alternative to smoking marijuana. Because nutmeg is legal to purchase and can be found at practically any grocery store or supermarket, the spice is easier for adolescents and other recreational users to get ahold of. Smoking nutmeg is also a cheaper high, compared to marijuana, and most adolescents can find the spice in their own kitchen cabinets. Since this spice is marketed and sold for human consumption, people underestimate the dangers of using this substance as a way to get high.

The Dangerous Effects of Smoking Nutmeg

Inhaling high doses of nutmeg can produce a wide array of effects, from euphoria to full-blown hallucinogenic experiences similar to those produced by using LSD. Most individuals who have experienced the psychedelic effects of smoking nutmeg vouch that the negative side effects of the drug are not even worth the “high” that they sought to achieve.

The effects of smoking nutmeg can persist for a few days, and when used in large quantities, the drug can be extremely toxic, causing poisoning, overdose, hospitalization and even death. Other risk factors of smoking nutmeg include the following:

  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Heart palpitations
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Body aches
  • Depression
  • Convulsions
  • Respiratory depression

Other dangerous side effects of nutmeg are related to the psychedelic effects. Hallucinations and delirium can cause impaired decision making and risky behavior.
